Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC), established in November 2001, is a premier medical institution in New Delhi, India. Affiliated with Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, it is attached to Safdarjung Hospital, one of the largest government hospitals in the country. The college was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, on December 17, 2001. Since its inception, VMMC has become a preferred destination for medical aspirants, offering a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
Vardhman Mahavir Medical College was established in 2001 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The college is named after Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, symbolizing non-violence and compassion. Safdarjung Hospital, on the other hand, has a much longer history, dating back to the colonial era. It was established in 1942 during World War II as a military hospital and later converted into a civilian hospital post-independence.
The merger of Safdarjung Hospital with VMMC has created a symbiotic relationship where the hospital provides extensive clinical exposure to the medical students, while the college contributes to the hospital’s academic and research endeavors.
