Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER), formerly known as Sri Ramachandra University, is a premier educational institution located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research was established in 1985 by the Sri Ramachandra Educational and Health Trust, a charitable organization founded by Shri N.P.V. Ramasamy Udayar. The trust was established with the aim of providing quality education and healthcare services to the underprivileged sections of society. The institution was initially set up as a medical college, the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute (SRMC&RI), which was affiliated with the University of Madras.

The medical college was established with the goal of addressing the shortage of qualified healthcare professionals in India and to provide affordable healthcare services to the community. The first batch of MBBS students was admitted in 1985, and the college quickly gained a reputation for its rigorous academic standards and commitment to excellence in medical education.


Growth and Expansion

Over the years, Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute expanded its academic offerings to include a wide range of programs in various healthcare disciplines. In 1997, the institution was granted the status of a deemed university by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. In 2006, the institution was renamed Sri Ramachandra University, reflecting its broader focus on higher education and research across multiple disciplines. In 2018, the institution was renamed once again, this time as Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER), to better reflect its status as a multidisciplinary institution offering a wide range of programs in higher education and research.
