NIMHANS traces its origins back to 1847 when the Bangalore Lunatic Asylum was founded. In 1925, it was renamed the Government Mental Hospital, becoming the first institute in India to offer postgraduate training in psychiatry. The institute was inaugurated on December 27, 1974, as an autonomous body under the Societies Registration Act, aiming to lead in medical service and research. In 1994, NIMHANS was conferred deemed university status by the University Grants Commission, granting it academic autonomy. In 2012, it was declared an Institute of National Importance by an act of Parliament.

NIMHANS traces its origins to the establishment of the Bangalore Lunatic Asylum. The asylum was initially set up to provide care for individuals with mental illnesses.
