Jamia Millia Islamia was established on October 29, 1920, in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, during the Khilafat and Non-Cooperation Movement. The founders, including Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar, Hakim Ajmal Khan, and Dr. Zakir Hussain, envisioned an institution that would promote education and empowerment among Indian Muslims while fostering national integration.

The university was later shifted to Delhi in 1925 and found its permanent home in Jamia Nagar, New Delhi.
