History and Evolution

ICT was founded as the University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT) of the University of Mumbai in 1933. Over the decades, it evolved into a leading institution, gaining autonomy in 2008 and being renamed as the Institute of Chemical Technology. The institute has been instrumental in pioneering research and development in chemical engineering and technology, contributing significantly to India’s industrial growth.

The origins of ICT date back to 1933 when it was established as the Department of Chemical Technology at the University of Bombay (now the University of Mumbai). The department was set up with the aim of providing specialized education in chemical technology to meet the growing demands of India’s chemical industry.

Over the years, the department gained recognition for its excellence in teaching and research. In 1986, it was granted autonomy and renamed the University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT). The institute continued to expand its academic programs and research facilities, earning a reputation as a center of excellence.

In 2008, UDCT was granted the status of a Deemed University and renamed the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT). This transition marked a new era for the institute, enabling it to offer a wider range of programs and strengthen its research capabilities.

Today, ICT has campuses in Mumbai, Marathwada, and Bhubaneswar, with plans for further expansion. The institute has also forged collaborations with leading universities and industries worldwide, enhancing its global presence.
